The European Institute for Design and Disability, EIDD, was founded in Dublin in 1993 with the aim of promoting better design for people with disabilities. This website is for design students and their tutors, professional designers, design managers and policy makers across Europe. It was created to introduce newcomers to key concepts, examples and design/research methods, and to support practitioners in building up their own collection of tools and techniques. A network of 160 organisations in EU member states and Norway.

Universal Design (UD) is an approach to design that increases the potential for developing a better quality of life for a wide range of individuals. It is a design process that enables and empowers a diverse population by improving human performance, health and wellness, and social participation (Steinfeld and Maisel, 2012). It creates products, systems, and environments to be as usable as possible by as many people as possible regardless of age, ability or situation.
