The potential benefits of mobile devices and Apps for people with disabilities

I am always conscious about sensationalising technology and giving the impression that it is “the cure”. Technology is a fantastic tool for some people with disabilities and can make a huge difference to them and their lives. However, people need to remember that it is not a one size fits all approach. Some people with disabilities just do not like technology or may find it more of a hindrance than a help. This is the exact reason that it is essential to get an assessment done prior to purchasing any mobile device for a person with a disability. The assessment will show you whether or not someone is suitable to use this technology and if so, what device suits them best.

Universal Design (UD) is an approach to design that increases the potential for developing a better quality of life for a wide range of individuals. It is a design process that enables and empowers a diverse population by improving human performance, health and wellness, and social participation (Steinfeld and Maisel, 2012). It creates products, systems, and environments to be as usable as possible by as many people as possible regardless of age, ability or situation.
